Q1 What
are some of your positive and some of your negative experiences with modern
technology?
Positive:
World, USA and local news, family and friends’ communication and information of
all kinds are all instant and in the moment.
Negative: Technology has made us so efficient that we don't need to relate to
the bank teller, the postal clerk, the grocery clerk or neighbors...if we rely
on the automatic self-serve at the touch of a computer screen or button for our
garage doors. Cells, texting, Face Book, Twitter, I pads, Kindles, WIIs, all
keep eyes and minds focused. Unfortunately, we don't receive that
personal attention, genuine sharing, visiting and doing that made our lives
worthwhile 50 years ago. Keeping up with the latest technology is a challenge
as well, as it takes the mind set to want to learn and change at a
fast pace.
Q2 What
are some of your most memorable experiences?
Memorable
experiences for childhood in Loveland would be trick or treating the whole town
and doubling back to the good treats houses, like Nehi bottling, with a fresh,
empty pillow case. During teen years, on Halloween
it was fun to go downtown loaded with cans of whipping cream and having "a
fight". I remember we went in a garage where some guy had his prize car
locked up to prevent pranks...We happily covered it with whipping cream.
Childhood meant biking to the swimming pool daily and spending the entire day
there...My annual swimsuit was faded and snagged by summer's end. One time I
picked up impetigo (blisters around the mouth)
along with my friends. We couldn't go swimming until it cleared up...an eternity
(a week). We heard "Don't go in the water over tired. You'll get
polio." Ester Williams was my idol...a beautiful champion swimmer.
When I was 12, I rode my bike to Loveland Lake and parked it by the miniature Statue of Liberty. I swam clear across (floated a
lot) and remember a boater stopping me and insisting I get in the boat because
of the danger of drowning. I adamantly insisted on finishing until I reached
the western shore. He then gave me a speed boat
ride back to my bike. I remember my Mom saying, "You did what?" and
yelling a lot. Later Loveland Lake became a thrill as we drove the car on
the ice...and then floored it (when we heard cracking) to get to the shore. I
remember we hid in the brush when we saw the police car shine their
lights. Of course, they found us...and I don't think we ever told them
what we'd just done. I was worried they'd call my Mom.
Remember movies at the Rialto? We'd watch Superman, Sky King and
cartoons. They would sell us candy bars for a nickel. I got Milk Duds and Big
Hunks. Popcorn was a dime. The weekly news was in black and white. We'd sit in
the balcony because below you got covered with popcorn. Admission was 35
cents. I mowed our HUGE lawn every week for my 50 cent allowance with a push
mower. Later drive-ins were such fun...piling in the car and getting the car so
you could see and the speakers to hear double features. Also we'd note who was
making out or would be a participant.
Q3 What
fun activities/hobbies, etc. do you participate in?
My adult
years have been child focused. When my children were in school I led Scouts for
8 years, taught Sunday school, PTA etc. My grandson Chauncey, 20, grew up near
by and was a big part of our life. For 21 years at Oregon Humane Society I
worked with all ages of youths (average to high risk)in schools, residential
treatment, clubs, and LOTS of Girl Scouts. Humane
education meant teaching them to be kind and understand the behavior of
pets. I had camps, clubs, parades, animal assisted
therapy in all sorts of places, poster and writing contests, talent
shows, pet shows etc. Newly retired, I'm spending more time with my two
grandsons Tom 8 and John 7. I'm volunteering in pediatrics at a hospital
helping with bingo (everyone wins
prizes) for some very sick kids. I also help as a 3rd grade Sunday school teacher
and am cleared to be a BIG Sister and hope to get a match soon. Once a week I
walk with seniors or play board games when it's too cold and rainy, for an
assisted living facility. I joined a women's Bible study and OAKS group (Older Active Kindred
Spirits). I take a lot of classes--health related, senior studies (various
topics), and take lots of walks (pretty hikes too). I walk my 2 dogs rain
(yellow slickers)or shine, take lots of photos (my family makes faces and turn
away now), and write lots of notes(out dated I know). I love to travel and want
to see a lot more of the USA and world!
Q4 What
are some of the major changes in your life?
My life
has been 4 major seasons...growing up in Loveland with the simple, innocent
life it was, compared to life in the USA now. I remember Loveland High and
being in pep club and chanting "Go Indians go" and being an alternate
letter bearer. I never knew what the football plays meant...other than when we
lost to "stinking Greeley", they'd tear the goal post down. I remember
the cafeteria served fish on Fridays. Not athletic, gym class meant not quite
running, jumping or chinning myself. We did scrub the balcony with our gym
suits on Fridays. Not musical, I played no instrument nor was ever selected to
sing in choir as I was tone deaf apparently. I remember pimples
being devastating and Clearasil my salvation. I do remember laughing and having
a very good time regardless of how appropriate it was. I remember teasing
(along with everyone in the class)a nervous older teacher by clicking our pens
all together (copying her nervous habit)...And her running out of the room. I
remember being caught chewing gum and having to walk on my knees to the waste basket
to spit it out. I remember writing, "I will not get out of my seat when
the teacher leaves the room" 500 times on the blackboard. We also distracted
a certain Social Studies teacher(coach)on a
regular basis so he wouldn't have time to give us homework. Then there was the
time Wayne Eagan was dared to throw a desk out the window (sailing by the high
school office) and crashing below. Second phase was marrying Jim (44 years
ago) and raising Jill and Matthew in Littleton. I wrote personal interest
stories for newspapers and published a neighborhood magazine (marketing and
reporting both). Third season was moving to Portland, Oregon and working as Humane Education Director for Oregon Humane
Society. Now in the fourth season...retirement. And catching up with all
of you!!!
Personal narrative 2011:
I'm so
looking forward to seeing all of you and sharing your memories of life in
Loveland! Special times forever remembered. Half a century...so many changes.
How blessed we were to grow up in the Sweetheart town!
