Q1 What are some of your positive and some of your
negative experiences with modern technology?
The availability of information on the internet and the features enabling bill-paying,
comparative shopping, ordering, researching and exchanging information are
among the positive features.
The negative features are the intrusions by hackers, spam and the
vulnerability of sensitive information to would be hackers and scammers. One must
be constantly vigilant to ensure their system is not compromised.
Q2 What are some of your most memorable experiences?
My first day at work at Hewlett Packard, March 11, 1966 and
my last day at work at HP, October 15th, 2005.
Transferring and relocating to San
Diego with HP in Nov. 1986, and the
returning to Loveland HP in March 1989.
Transfer to Vancouver, WA
HP April 1996 to an engineering position which required considerable domestic
and international travel.
The deaths of my parents, my mother in Jan. 1998 and my
father in Nov.2001.
Going through the emotional aspects of my wife's, (Diane),
bout with breast cancer, surgery, chemo-therapy and reconstruction in
2002-2004.
Taking my grand niece and nephew fishing in Alaska when they
were 13 and 14 respectively.
Most recently, having my first ambulance rides and spending
my first nights in a hospital subsequent to having spinal disc surgery, twice
within 30 days and having to cancel all of my travel plans for 6 months.
Q3 What fun activities/hobbies, etc. do you
participate in?
I enjoy fly fishing and related travel to Alaska and Mexico.
I enjoy planning and executing travel with Diane to international and
domestic destinations. Together we have taken some 20 cruises to
destinations including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Canada.
I enjoy working on small metal and woodworking projects in my shop.
I enjoy reading adventure and outdoor subject books.
I enjoy surfing the net and communicating with friends via e-mail, and to a lesser
extent, Facebook.
Q4 What are some of the major changes in your life?
Well certainly my retirement has been a significant change. It has provided the
opportunity to see and do things that were not possible while working; especially
traveling for pleasure.
I am beginning to feel older, and probably look older, particularly of late, following
my back surgery and the lengthy recuperation period. I know I will never
have the strength and endurance I once had.
Also, relenting to have someone, Diane, do things for me that I have always done
myself. In essence, giving up control, as I tend to
have a need to be in control as much as possible.
Looking ahead to new adventures and 20-25 more years of life
together with my dear wife, Diane.
Personal narrative 2011:
I was
born in Loveland and grew up there, went to school there, worked there, and
call it my home, even though I have lived in Vancouver, WA for the past 15
years. I enjoyed a long and rewarding career at Hewlett-Packard, when it was considered the
best company in the nation. I had a number of different positions including,
sheet metal
fabricator, tool and die maker, supervisor, manager and finally after 30 years,
mechanical procurement engineer. The latter afforded me the
opportunity to travel to international and domestic locations to find and work
with suppliers. I have always enjoyed being on the road and this experience at
HP gave me the impetus, since retirement to see as much of the world with Diane
as we desired and were able manage.
At this point, we are enjoying being together and sharing time with our niece,
by marriage, and her two teenage children and her husband. We have no plans to
relocate any time in the foreseeable future as we enjoy this area and the
climate. Our final resting place with be in Loveland, whenever that time comes.
