In 2002 we made a short vacation trip to New Mexico and discovered the small town of Carlsbad.  In 2003 we were invited to visit Carlsbad again to check out the "retirement living."  During that visit, we felt we weren't quite ready for the retirement living area, but we looked to the west of Carlsbad, located in the valley of the Pecos River, and saw a wonderful hill overlooking the city. Subsequently we bought a lot there which views the city to the east and a horizon that appears to go forever.  December 2003 we left Fort Worth and our son and daughter, her husband and 2 boys after enjoying being close to them during the 5
years we spent there and embarked on a new adventure in Carlsbad.  Our adventure being, doing as much as we have been able to contribute in building a Santa Fe style home.  We've had good sub-contractors but have also done tons of work ourselves and it's been totally fun and very satisfying.  15 months passed before we moved in and we're still at it, but what is yet to be done is outside (courtyard, walls, landscaping).  So far, no big fights ... and credit for that
is the fact that not having to report to jobs makes a HUGE difference.  While we miss our family back in Texas, the 5 years we were near them there were wonderful and we still have quality time with them now and then.  We are simply happier here in this small town versus the gigantic metroplex of DFW.  And the weather here is SO fantastic!  We've made nice friends here and really love that we often have visitors from Colorado too.  If any of my LHS classmates happen this way, we'd love to extend our hospitality to you!
